Careers Guidance

Careers advice is an integrated part of the curriculum throughout a young person’s life at Framwellgate School Durham. Inspiration comes from curriculum areas, with themed weeks allowing students to experience real world situations relating to their subjects. More specific advice and guidance is delivered through PHSCE, the tutor programme and collapsed curriculum days.

Students will receive tailored advice and individual interviews prior to making important decisions relating to their next steps, these key times are:

  • In the second term of Year 9 when choosing their GCSE options
  • In the last term of Year 10 and throughout Year 11 when choosing their Post 16 options
  • Throughout Year 12 and 13 when choosing their Post 18 options

When considering their options students sometimes have a particular career in mind, or know they enjoy or are good at certain subjects. Some students might have very little idea of what they want to do in future. Either way we can provide advice to guide them to their next steps, this can be supported through research at home and the following websites may prove useful:

The National Careers Service

The National Careers Service website provides careers advice and information on a wide range of jobs, training course resources and funding. You can also talk to an adviser online or request a call back.


A County Durham based website covering local opportunities and giving access to local advice.


Universities application service – can be used by all year groups to find information on university courses and entry requirements, and by students in the Sixth Form to make their applications.

National Apprenticeship Service

Can be used by all year groups to find out more about apprenticeships and by Year 11 and 13 students to apply for local vacancies.
